Honda Millimeter Wave Radar Function Error (P2583)
Why Honda Sensing switches off, what the radar codes mean, and how the front radar can be repaired.
Honda Sensing uses a millimeter wave radar at the front of the car to measure the distance to the vehicle ahead. Features such as collision mitigation braking and adaptive cruise control depend on it. When the radar has a fault, Honda Sensing warnings appear and those features can switch off.
The codes
On the 2019 Honda Vezel in the photo above, the driver assistance system showed two codes:
- P2583-4A Millimeter Wave Radar Function Error: the radar unit itself has a fault.
- P2583-54 Millimeter Wave Radar Aiming Incomplete: the radar needs to be aimed (calibrated).
Everything else on the car scanned clean, so the problem was the radar.
Radar and ABS faults on the same car
Honda Sensing also uses information from the VSA (ABS) unit, so the two systems can show faults together. We have seen a Honda Vezel with three permanent codes at once: U3000-49 “Multipurpose Camera Unit/Millimeter Wave Radar Internal Electronic Failure”, plus U0416-68 and U0416-F8 for the VSA brake actuator and modulator control unit. In a case like that both units need attention, and we read every code before deciding what to repair.
Other things that can upset the radar
- Dirt, mud or a sticker over the front emblem or grille where the radar sits
- A knock to the front of the car, which can move the radar out of line
- Front bumper or grille repairs
These are worth ruling out first. If the radar unit itself has failed, clearing the code will not fix it.
